Als Joseph Parsons' Debüt "Lies" 1995 veröffentlicht wurde, war es ein Erfolg für ihn. Als "unsigned" Künstler hatte er eine Sammlung aufrichtiger und gefühlvoller Songs herausgebracht, die die Grundlage für Radiosongs und eine Fangemeinde bildeten. "5 am" bringt Parsons einen gehörigen Schritt weiter. Allein schon der Sound ist kristallklar dank einer tollen Produktion. Schon der Opener hat es in sich: "Sister Moon" klingt wie ein Outtake eines Page/Plant Songs mit Ethno-Einfluß und östlichen Klängen. Was Parsons besonders hervorhebt, ist die Fähigkeit, komplizierte Emotionen in Texte zu packen. Seine Stimme, die oft mit der von Ed Kowalczyk von "Live" verglichen wird, und seine Songs haben mal Singer/Songwriter-Charakter, mal krachen laute E-Gitarren, doch immer wieder verblüfft Parsons, wie leicht er Melodien aus dem Ärmel schüttelt.


When Joseph Parsons' debut "Lies" was released in 1995, it was a genuine triumph. As an unsigned artist, he had released a collection of earnest and emotive songs that generated both the airplay and the fanbase it deserved. On his follow-up "5am", Parsons finds a way to take his music to the next step. The most noticable improvement over "Lies" is how great the music sounds. The opening track "Sister Moon" is a scorcher: sounding like an outtake from the recent Plant/Page sessions, it has a distinctly Eastern feel. What makes Parsons great is his ability to express complicated motion in lyric. All the songs, whether singer/songwriter style or catchy electric guitar tunes, have one in common: great hooklines and melodies.
